Ismaila Sarr is on fire for Senegal at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026. The 28-year-old forward scored three goals during the group stage and has added another in Senegal’s Round of 32 match against Belgium. In the fixture at Lumen Field in Seattle, Sarr opened his account by scoring Senegal’s second goal in the 51st minute.
The goal against the Red Devils helped Sarr equal the record for the most goals scored by an African player in a single FIFA World Cup edition.
Before Sarr, who plays for Crystal Palace in the Premier League, only Cameroon’s Roger Milla had scored four goals in a single FIFA World Cup. Milla, who is also the oldest player to score in a FIFA World Cup match, achieved the feat at the 1990 edition.

At the 1990 FIFA World Cup, Milla scored twice against Romania at Stadio San Nicola in Bari on June 14, 1990, and followed it up with another brace against Colombia at Stadio San Paolo in Naples on June 23, 1990.
Sarr, meanwhile, scored a brace in Senegal’s second Group I match against Norway at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on June 22 before finding the net once in Senegal’s 5-0 win over Iraq at BMO Field in Toronto on June 26.
Sarr also represented Senegal at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he scored once in the group stage against Ecuador at Khalifa International Stadium in Al Rayyan on November 29, 2022.

With his latest strike, Sarr has now taken his FIFA World Cup tally to five goals. If he scores one more, he will equal Asamoah Gyan’s record for the most goals by an African player in FIFA World Cup history.
Gyan scored six goals in 11 FIFA World Cup matches for Ghana across three editions (2006, 2010 and 2014).
