Former United States Marine Corps officer Dan Grazier opined that it was “definitely possible" that Israel, a long-standing foe of Iran, was responsible for the recent strikes that targeted multiple sites across the country. He said that if Washington had conducted the attacks, President Donald Trump would have claimed responsibility.

“It’s certainly possible that Israel could be behind whatever military actions are going on right now. I guess we’re going to have to wait for confirmation from them," Grazier told Al Jazeera.

Iranian state-run media reported that two military sites in two different cities came under attack on Thursday evening as fresh tensions erupted in West Asia. However, a US official denied the country’s involvement in the bombing, saying they were not conducting strikes at the time.

‘Trump Would Have Taken Responsibility’

The Ex-Marine Corps officer said had the United States been involved in the strikes across Iran, President Trump would have taken the responsibility.

“I have to imagine that the United States, Donald Trump in particular, would take responsibility if it was the United States. But so far, Israel and the United States have been working kind of hand-in-hand throughout the whole course of this conflict, going all the way back to the end of February. It’s definitely possible that the Israelis could be responsible for what’s happening today", Grazier told Al Jazeera.

According to Iran’s Mehr news agency, six explosions were reported in Iran’s Bushehr and Choghadak late Thursday evening. Iran’s IRNA news agency, citing the Governor of Konarak, said that jets targeted the naval military zone in the southern Iranian city.

State media also reported that a military facility near the city of Bushehr –– hosting the country’s nuclear power plant on the outskirts –– was hit by “US-Israeli enemy projectiles."

A US official, however, denied the claim. Meanwhile, Israeli officials told CNN that they were “not familiar with any Israeli involvement in strikes in Iran right now."

Fresh Tumult In West Asia

A fresh escalation in West Asia erupted even as the United States and Iran were engaged in peace negotiations to end the conflict. The tensions followed US strikes across multiple targets in Iran this week as the country’s forces claimed that the bombing was in retaliation for the Iranian attacks on three vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz.

Subsequently, Tehran targeted US military facilities across Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan. An Iranian official said the country was not in conflict with its neighbours but facilities linked to Washington were the targets.
