India Monsoon: Fresh satellite imagery from Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Wednesday showed a dramatic surge in monsoon cloud cover sweeping across northern India, signalling a strong revival of the southwest monsoon after one of the country’s driest Junes.

The latest thermal infrared images captured dense cloud bands stretching from central India into the Indo-Gangetic plains, driven by an active monsoon circulation and fresh weather systems over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the India Meteorologiacl Department (IMD), ISRO’s INSAT-3DS IR imagery showed cloud mass all along central adjoining northern peninsula, northwest, East and Westcoast of India.

Satellite imagery also showed moisture-laden winds from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal converging over northern India, while the monsoon trough has begun shifting closer to its normal position, creating favourable conditions for sustained rainfall across the plains.

The enhanced cloud activity has already brought widespread rainfall to several states, including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and others.

Earlier this week, satellite imagery also showed a nearly 1,500-km-long continuous rain band stretching from West Bengal to Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting the revival of active monsoon conditions over much of the country.

As seen in the satellite imagery, a tight rain-bearing clouds stretches through eastern, central and northern India. Thunderstorms are not scattered, but rather the clouds look joined in one long line. This is an indication of the onset of an active monsoon circulation, according to meteorologists. These huge clouds carry a tremendous amount of moisture and frequently bring heavy rain to several states simultaneously.

As per the weather department, the southwest monsoon advanced into most parts of west Uttar Pradesh and some areas of east Haryana on July 1 following widespread rain and thunderstorms. Weather officials expect the monsoon to continue its rapid northward advance over the next 24 hours.

Forecasts indicate that the onset of the monsoon is likely over Delhi-NCR, Chandigarh, and more parts of Haryana and Punjab between Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon. Initial thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are expected to be followed by more widespread rainfall as the monsoon establishes itself across the region.
