United States Vice President JD Vance on Thursday defended President Donald Trump’s handling of Iran, saying the administration had remained focused on its original objectives despite calls to broaden its mission.

Speaking at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library, Vance said Trump’s goals had remained consistent throughout the conflict.

“They’re constantly trying to change the mission that Donald Trump set for us," he said.

Outlining the administration’s objectives, Vance said, “What did he say at the outset? ‘I want to destroy their conventional military. I want to eliminate their ability to project power. And I want to ensure that they never have a nuclear weapon.’"

He said some had urged the administration to pursue different objectives.

“What I’ve seen is some people trying to say, ‘Well, that’s great, but you should have a different objective,’" the vice-president said.

According to Vance, Trump’s refusal to alter the mission had been central to the administration’s approach.

“I think the reason the president has been so successful is because he refuses to give in to that impulse," he said.

He added that the administration had created leverage through its actions and intended to use it in the next phase.

“He says, ‘We accomplished what we set out to do. We created incredible diplomatic, economic, and military leverage. Let’s use that leverage to go and accomplish an even bigger win for the American people,’" Vance said.

Vance concluded by saying, “That’s what he’s asked us to do. It’s not over yet, but so far, so good."

His remarks come after the United States and Iran signed a preliminary agreement aimed at ending the conflict that began with US and Israeli military action in late February.

The US and Iran are currently engaged in a 60-day round of negotiations covering Tehran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

During the conflict, Iran imposed a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea.

Tehran has since said it plans to introduce maritime service fees, while the Revolutionary Guards have warned that unauthorised crossings through the strait would be “dealt with."
