A light-hearted exchange between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Finland's Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen has gone viral on social media, with Jaishankar's quick-witted response and the Finnish minister's reaction emerging as one of the most talked-about moments of his visit to the Nordic nation.

The moment came during a media interaction following bilateral talks between the two leaders. As Jaishankar referred to discussions on defence cooperation, Valtonen jokingly remarked that the two sides had signed many deals.

What followed left the room laughing.

"You're not supposed to say that," Jaishankar shot back with a smile, prompting an amused reaction from Valtonen, whose expression quickly became the centre of attention online.

VIRAL MOMENT FROM FINLAND

Clips of the exchange spread rapidly across social media platforms, with many users praising the chemistry between the two ministers and Jaishankar's sense of humour.

The video captured Valtonen visibly caught off guard by the playful response before she burst into laughter, creating a moment that stood out amid discussions on diplomacy, security and international cooperation.

Several users described the exchange as one of the most relatable and entertaining diplomatic moments seen in recent months.

Dr. Jaishankar: Minister Valtonen and I were just discussing defence

ANOTHER JAISHANKAR ONE-LINER

The exchange with Valtonen was not the only moment that drew attention during the Finland visit.

During a separate interaction, UAE Assistant Foreign Minister Lana Nusseibeh jokingly remarked, "It's been a really quiet time in my part of the world," a reference to the continuing tensions in West Asia.

Jaishankar quickly responded, "That's why you came here to Finland."

The remark again drew laughter from those present and soon found its way onto social media.

INDIA'S RUSSIAN OIL POLICY FINDS SUPPORT

Beyond the lighter moments, Jaishankar's visit also saw Finland offer unexpected support for India's purchase of Russian oil.

Speaking at the Kultaranta Talks, Valtonen said India had operated within the framework of the oil price cap introduced by Western countries after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"In India's defence, it has bought oil under the price cap. That was the intention," she said during a panel discussion that also featured Jaishankar and UAE Assistant Foreign Minister Lana Nusseibeh.

Valtonen argued that the mechanism was never meant to stop countries from purchasing Russian crude altogether.

"When we introduced the oil price cap, we did not prohibit the world from buying Russian oil. The entire idea was not to disrupt the oil market but to make sure oil continued to be supplied while Russia did not make massive margins from it," she said.

Her remarks came as Jaishankar mounted a strong defence of India's energy policy and pushed back against criticism over New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war.

While much of the discussion focused on issues such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict, energy security and international cooperation, it was the lighter moments from the sidelines that ended up capturing the internet's attention.

For many online, the image of a smiling Jaishankar and Valtonen's priceless reaction became the defining snapshot of the visit, proving once again that even high-level diplomacy has room for humour.
