Jutta Leerdam surprised fans this week when she shared that she trained with American speed skating star Jordan Stolz. Many people first thought it was just a rumor. But it turned out to be true.
The Dutch Olympic medalist said the idea only happened after she saw a made-up report about them skating together. Instead of ignoring it, she decided to make it real. “Me training with Jordan Stolz. That wasn’t even a thing,” Jutta Leerdam said. “And then we were like, ‘Oh. We should maybe do that.’ So then we trained together.”The session started in a simple way. They first rode stationary bikes. After that, they went on the ice.
Leerdam skated behind Stolz for a few laps to study his rhythm and timing. “He’s super good at skating. I understand his timing when you skate behind someone. It can always help,” she said in the same interview. For many fans, it felt unexpected. The Netherlands and the United States are strong rivals in Olympic speed skating.
Seeing two top stars from different countries train side by side added a fresh twist to the story.

The 21-year-old won gold in both the 500 meters and 1,000 meters. In each race, he beat Dutch skater Jenning de Boo. His finishes were strong and confident, and both wins set new Olympic records. That is why their joint practice caught attention. When a skater follows another athlete on the ice, it helps with pace and focus. You can feel the speed in front of you. You can match turns and improve control. It is a simple method, but it works at the highest level.Jordan Stolz still has the 1,500 meters and mass start ahead. “Going into the 1,500, I have a few days to relax before that. And right now, my speed and endurance feel really good,” Stolz said. “So if I skate a clean race, it should be a good result.”Jutta Leerdam will also keep pushing in her remaining events. Even though they skate for different flags, their short training moment shows that top athletes can still learn from each other.
