The wake-up call that changed everything
Jelly Roll’s turning point came around his 39th birthday when he realised that his health had reached a dangerous point.
Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience, the singer admitted, "I could feel myself dying."Having already suffered multiple heart issues, he knew he could no longer ignore the warning signs. Instead of chasing another quick-fix diet, he decided to make a lasting change."I'm going to think about what I'm doing and be intentional,"he said, adding that this time he wanted to lose weight gradually and build habits that would last a lifetime.
From walking a mile to running a 5K
Jelly Roll’s transformation was primarily based on exercise. He began by walking before gradually progressing to running. In April 2024, he completed the 2 Bears 5K race in Los Angeles, an emotional achievement considering the fact, just a few months earlier, it was literally a task to even walk a mile.Gradually, his fitness ameliorated and he consistently ran two to three miles a day, four to six days a week. He also incorporated 20 to 30 minutes in the sauna, daily cold plunges, basketball, boxing and long walks around concert arenas while touring.By May 2024, fans noticed his upgraded version; slimmer appearance at the Academy of Country Music Awards, where he revealed he had already lost more than 70 pounds.
Winning the battle against food addiction
While workouts played an essential role, Jelly Roll has repeatedly highlighted the fact that the real battle happened at the dinner table. He admitted that changing his relationship with food after nearly four decades was the hardest challenge. But instead of following a restrictive diet, he put more effort into eating protein-rich meals, vegetables and nutritious foods.Reducing alcohol consumption was also another striking step of his routine. Nutritionist Ian Larios also helped him recreate healthier versions of his favourite comfort foods during tours, including air-fried Nashville hot chicken, banana bowls with Manuka honey and high-protein meals after performances.Even today, Jelly Roll says anyone battling obesity must first confront food addiction before anything else.
A 200-pound transformation built on consistency
The results of his dedication continued to bewilder her fans. After losing more than 70 pounds in early 2024, he crossed the 100-pound milestone later that year.In April 2025, while talking about his transformation, Jelly Roll revealed that he had gone through a huge transformation, from 540 pounds to 357 pounds. The journey had its own struggles but the singer was proud of it. Many times he had to go through a number of issues such as emotional eating, excessive drinking, lack of sleep and the demanding touring lifestyle.
But eventually he overcame everything.A few months later, while speaking to the Tennessee Titans football team in August 2025, he announced he had officially lost more than 200 pounds.Instead of celebrating and stopping there, he joked that he needed to lose another 50 pounds before earning himself a football contract, proving that his motivation remains stronger than ever.
