A brother strangled his 13-year-old sister to death in Jharkhand’s capital Ranchi over a social media post. The incident came to light weeks after the villagers informed the police, noticing post-death rituals being performed at the house.

The incident took place on March 13 in a village under the Ratu police station limits. However, it remained hidden until April 2. The officials arrested the 29-year-old accused and his father, according to a report by NDTV.

“We arrested the father Subodh Pathak and his son Rahul. During interrogation, the father said that the girl had been in contact via social media platforms with his son’s brother-in-law, much to the chagrin of the accused.

On March 13, an altercation between his daughter and son escalated, and Rahul strangled her to death," Rural SP Praveen Pushkar was quoted as saying by NDTV.

An altercation that took place on March 13 between his daughter and son escalated and Rahul strangled her to death, said the official.

Family Tried To Hide Crime

The family allegedly tried to conceal the crime. In order to do that, the father contacted a doctor known to him, who confirmed the girl’s death and advised that the body be cremated. The family then hired an ambulance and took the body to Gaya in Bihar, where it was cremated.

Victim Was Adopted

According to the police cited by the outlet, Subodh Pathak had adopted the girl from Bihar’s Aurangabad district when she was five years old. The adoption reportedly took place after his biological daughter had eloped. Officials added that Rahul had not accepted his adoptive sister, and she was treated differently in the household, with even her meals prepared separately.

Officials Visit Victim’s Hometown

A team of police also visited Aurangabad to trace the girl’s biological family. Her father told police that he had given his daughter to Subodh Pathak after his wife’s death, as he was disabled and unable to care for her.

The police have recorded the statement of the ambulance driver and are now searching for the doctor who was contacted after the incident. Officials also said Rahul’s wife was not present at home on the day of the crime.

Both accused are currently in judicial custody, and further investigation is underway.
