A federal judicial panel in the United States has disciplined a district judge after an investigation uncovered a two-year extramarital affair with a senior police officer, including alleged sexual encounters inside the judge’s private chambers during office hours.

In a ruling finalised by a seven-judge committee, the panel said the encounters took place “within earshot" of court staff, creating what it described as an uncomfortable and troubling workplace environment for federal employees.

The scandal surfaced after a law clerk filed a formal complaint with Chief Judge William Pryor, alleging that the judge regularly engaged in sexual activity with a uniformed law enforcement officer during business hours, CNBC reported.

The judge initially dismissed the allegations as “baseless." However, a special investigative committee later found evidence of misconduct spanning nearly two years.

According to the findings, the misconduct included sexual encounters inside federal court chambers, making false statements to senior judicial authorities during the initial inquiry, and improperly attending a political campaign event for a local district attorney candidate.

Despite the seriousness of the allegations, authorities have not publicly disclosed the judge’s identity.

The panel imposed several disciplinary measures, barring the judge from ever serving as a chief judge in federal court or participating in Judicial Conference committees. The judge was also directed to write formal apology letters to six former law clerks affected by the controversy.

The committee further noted that the affair left the judge “vulnerable to potential extortion or blackmail" and damaged the professional atmosphere within the court workplace.
