Former US Vice President Kamala Harris sharply criticised Joe Biden’s decision to seek a second term as president, describing it as an act of “recklessness" that should never have been driven by “an individual’s ego."

The remarks appear in an excerpt of Harris’s forthcoming memoir, 107 Days, obtained by The Atlantic. In the book, she reflects on the 2024 campaign and her own position within the Joe Biden administration.

Kamala Harris writes in the book, “Was it grace, or was it recklessness? In retrospect, I think it was recklessness. The stakes were simply too high. This wasn’t a choice that should have been left to an individual’s ego, an individual’s ambition. It should have been more than a personal decision."

Kamala Harris argued that she remained silent during months of growing unease about Joe Biden’s age and political viability because of what she calls her “delicate status" as vice president. She said that she remained loyal but was also as a target of indifference from Joe Biden’s inner circle.

“When I was attacked on everything from my laugh, to my tone of voice, to whom I’d dated in my 20s, or claimed I was a ‘DEI hire,’ the White House rarely pushed back with my actual résumé. Worse, I often learned that the president’s staff was adding fuel to negative narratives that sprang up around me," she wrote.

In the excerpt, she suggested that Joe Biden’s aides viewed her rising popularity as a threat, noting, “Their thinking was zero-sum: If she’s shining, he’s dimmed. None of them grasped that if I did well, he did well."

Kamala Harris described Joe Biden as “a smart guy with long experience and deep conviction" and insisted that, on his worst day, he was “more deeply knowledgeable, more capable of exercising judgment and far more compassionate than Donald Trump on his best."

“At 81, Joe got tired. That’s when his age showed in physical and verbal stumbles," she noted, citing his faltering debate performance as evidence of exhaustion rather than incapacity.

Kamala Harris’ memoir- 107 Days- is due to be published later this year.
