The Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Assam government to probe Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s alleged Pakistan links has submitted its findings to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The report was handed over at Lok Sewa Bhawan in the presence of SIT members Munna Prasad Gupta, Rosie Kalita, Pranabjyoti Goswami, and Maitrayee Deka.
In February this year, Sarma attacked Gogoi on the issue of his wife retaining her UK citizenship for 12 years and allegations that she was employed by an organisation with links to Pakistan's spy agency ISI. Sarma, without naming anyone in his social media posts, also flagged Gogoi's meeting with then Pakistani High Commissioner in 2015 despite India's protest.
The inquiry was initiated after Chief Minister Sarma repeatedly questioned Gogoi over alleged links of his wife with Pakistan.
Earlier this year, Sarma had asked whether Gogoi’s family members were Indian citizens and alleged that the Congress MP’s wife had “business and property connections” in Pakistan.
The claims sparked a political row, with the Congress dismissing the allegations as an attempt to malign Gogoi ahead of the elections.
Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, had strongly rejected the charges.
He maintained that his wife is an Indian citizen and said that Sarma’s comments were an effort to distract from pressing governance issues in Assam.
He accused the Sarma of indulging in “personal attacks without evidence” and vowed to continue focusing on his political responsibilities.
In May, Gogoi further clarified that his wife had no commercial or personal ties with Pakistan.
He accused the Chief Minister of “crossing all limits of political decency” and using state machinery to target political opponents.
The Congress also rallied behind Gogoi, accusing the ruling BJP in Assam of attempting to discredit one of its key leaders.
The SIT’s findings, submitted today, are expected to provide clarity on the controversy.
However, the contents of the report have not been made public yet. Chief Minister Sarma has not commented on the submission, while the Congress has reiterated its demand that the government stop character assassination of its leaders.
With the report now before the Chief Minister, the issue is likely to fuel further political sparring between the ruling BJP and the Congress in Assam, where both parties are preparing for crucial electoral battles ahead.
