A leading defence equipment manufacturer based in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur has secured a significant international contract, further strengthening India’s growing presence in the global defence export market. Gliders India Limited, formerly known as the Kanpur Parachute Factory, has received an order worth approximately Rs 26 crore from Vietnam for the supply of brake and pilot parachutes.

Under the agreement, the company will manufacture and supply a total of 274 specialised parachutes to be used in fighter aircraft. The latest deal has reinforced confidence in the country’s defence production capabilities and marked another milestone in the company’s expanding global footprint. In 2023 as well, the firm had secured an export order valued at around Rs 17 crore.

The parachutes are designed specifically for use in fighter jets such as the Sukhoi-30 and play a crucial role in ensuring aircraft and pilot safety. Brake parachutes are used to slow down and stop aircraft safely over short distances, particularly on limited runways or during emergency landings. Pilot parachutes, on the other hand, are vital life-saving systems that enable safe descent after ejection during accidents or critical situations.

Company officials said the parachutes are manufactured according to international standards and undergo rigorous testing before being supplied. The production facility uses advanced technology and specialised materials, including high-strength nylon fabric and reinforced cords, to ensure reliability under extreme conditions.

Each brake parachute is fitted with more than 32 suspension lines, weighs nearly 23 kgs, and has an operational lifespan of about 10 years. These systems are capable of handling aircraft landing speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour in emergency scenarios.

Balasubramaniam, General Manager of the Ordnance Parachute Factory, said the new order reflects the rising reputation of Indian defence manufacturers on the global stage. He noted that growing international trust indicates a shift in India’s position from a traditional importer of defence equipment to an emerging exporter.
