A BMLT student at Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJM) in Kanpur has alleged that three of her fellow students attempted to sexually assault her inside a classroom on the university campus. The incident has thrown the institution into crisis, raising urgent questions about campus safety.

What happened?

The alleged incident took place on March 16 in a classroom belonging to the Health Sciences department.

According to the complainant, the three accused students found her alone in the classroom and subjected her to molestation and an attempted assault. The survivor informed her family, who immediately approached the university administration. Vice Chancellor Sudhir Awasthi wasted no time — he alerted the police directly upon receiving the complaint.

Police act swiftly

Kalyanpur police registered an FIR against all three named accused and took them into custody. DCP SM Kasim Abidi confirmed the action: “Upon receiving the information, Kalyanpur police registered a case and detained all three named accused. The survivor’s statement is being recorded and her medical examination is underway. Further action will be taken on the basis of evidence."

University launches internal probe

The university administration has taken a firm stance. Vice Chancellor Sudhir Awasthi has constituted a five-member internal inquiry committee headed by the Proctor, Dean of Student Welfare, and the head of the concerned department. Strict disciplinary action, the administration said, will follow once the committee submits its report.

Campus safety in question — again

This is not the first time CSJM University has found itself at the centre of controversy. The latest incident has once again put the spotlight on the adequacy of security measures on the campus, and on whether students — particularly women — can feel safe within its premises.

The complainant’s medical examination and statement have been recorded. Further legal action will follow based on the evidence collected.
