A speeding Lamborghini in Kanpur’s Gwaltoli area on Sunday, February 8, has added another name to the growing list of luxury car accidents making headlines. Around 3.15 PM near Rev-3 Mall on VIP Road, the vehicle allegedly driven by Shivam Mishra, son of tobacco trader KK Mishra, went out of control and crashed into pedestrians and two-wheelers.

According to eyewitnesses, the car first struck an auto-rickshaw before slamming into a parked Royal Enfield motorcycle. The rider of the bike was reportedly thrown nearly 10 feet into the air. The Lamborghini allegedly dragged the motorcycle for some distance before stopping after hitting an electric pole. One of the injured, Taufiq from Yamunaganj, suffered serious leg injuries, while others sustained fractures and bruises. Residents gathered around the vehicle and prevented the driver from stepping out. Some witnesses alleged that private bouncers accompanying the accused pushed back the crowd aggressively while protesters later claimed there was pressure for compromise and delay in filing a case. Police seized the car and said, “The injured were provided primary treatment. An FIR will be registered, and further legal action will follow."

Earlier in 2025, another Lamborghini crash in Noida had drawn widespread attention. On March 30, a red Lamborghini Huracan hit two labourers sitting on a pavement at the Sector 94 roundabout. The car was being driven by Deepak Kumar, a car dealer from Ajmer, who was reportedly taking it for a test drive before deciding on a purchase. The victims, Dijen Ravidas and Rambhu Kumar from Chhattisgarh, suffered leg fractures and were rushed to hospital.

The Noida incident escalated after a 51-second video from the spot circulated widely. In the clip, when asked if he was “practising stunts,” Deepak responded, “Did anyone die here?.” He was arrested and booked under sections 281 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rash driving and causing hurt by an act endangering life. On March 31, within 24 hours of the accident, he was granted bail after furnishing a bond of Rs 25,000. Deepak later claimed he had been distracted by an error message on the car’s display system. He also said he had only “gently pressed the accelerator”.

In September 2024, Nagpur saw a crash involving an Audi Q8 registered to Sanket Bawankule, son of Maharashtra BJP President Chandrashekhar Bawankule. The accident took place in the early hours of September 9 in the Ramdaspeth area. The vehicle hit multiple cars and a moped that left two people injured. Police confirmed that Sanket was inside the car along with his two friends, Arjun Hawre and Ronit Chittamwar. Although the car belonged to Sanket, police stated Arjun was driving at the time.

Arjun and Ronit were initially caught by citizens and later arrested, though Arjun was released on bail as the offence was bailable. Reports later pointed out that CCTV footage from La Horre Bar, where the group allegedly consumed alcohol worth Rs 12,000 before the crash, was missing. The car’s number plates were reportedly dismantled and found hidden inside the vehicle. Opposition leaders questioned why Sanket’s name was not mentioned in the FIR at first despite his presence in the car.

In July 2024, Mumbai’s Worli area witnessed a fatal BMW hit-and-run case involving Mihir Shah, the 24-year-old son of a former Shiv Sena leader. In the early hours of July 7, the white BMW allegedly rammed into a scooter carrying Pradeep and Kaveri Nakhwa. While Pradeep was thrown aside, Kaveri, 45, became trapped under the car and was dragged for over 1.5 kilometres. She died in the incident while Pradip sustained injuries. Police said Shah had been heavily intoxicated after partying at a bar in Juhu. CCTV footage and reports suggested that he and his driver, Rajrishi Bidawat, switched seats after the crash.

Investigators alleged that at the direction of his father Rajesh Shah, the driver helped Mihir leave the scene. Shah evaded police for two days before being traced to an apartment in Virar after a friend briefly switched on a mobile phone. In November 2025, the Bombay High Court denied him bail after describing his conduct as “ruthless” and “inhuman”. In December 2025, the Supreme Court refused to entertain his bail plea and observed that “these boys need to be taught a lesson”. Both Mihir Shah and his driver remain in judicial custody as trial proceedings continue. Following the incident, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde removed Rajesh Shah from his party position.

In May 2024, Pune’s Kalyani Nagar became the site of a fatal crash involving a Porsche Taycan driven by a 17-year-old boy. On May 19, the vehicle, allegedly driven at excessive speed after the minor had consumed alcohol, hit a motorcycle carrying IT professionals Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa. Both died in the collision. The case drew attention after the minor was initially granted bail with conditions that included writing a 300-word essay on road safety. Three days later, he was sent to an observation home. On June 25, 2024, the Bombay High Court ordered his immediate release. The court stated that the Juvenile Justice Board’s order sending him to the observation home was illegal and that laws governing juveniles must be applied properly.

A year earlier, in July 2023, a speeding Jaguar driven by 19-year-old Tathya Patel crashed into a crowd on Ahmedabad’s ISKCON Bridge. The crowd had gathered after a minor collision between a Thar and a truck. Nine people were killed and 13 injured which included a police constable and a Home Guard jawan. Most of the other victims were students from other cities living in Ahmedabad as paying guests. Forensic reports estimated the car’s speed at around 141 kmph on a flyover with a 40 kmph limit. Patel faced charges under IPC Section 304 and remained in Sabarmati Jail after multiple bail pleas were rejected.
