The Karnataka government is considering a significant move that could change how young students interact with technology. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has initiated discussions on restricting mobile phone use for children below the age of 16, citing growing concerns over social media addiction and its impact on young minds.

The issue was raised during a meeting with vice chancellors of government universities. Seeking their views, the Chief Minister questioned whether such a restriction would be practical and beneficial.

“Today we are discussing this, and as you are all Vice Chancellors here, I seek your opinion. Children are falling prey to drugs. Also, in line with Australia and some European countries, there is a thought to ban mobile phones among students. I want your opinion on this. We are looking at this for children below 16, not adults. Many of them are falling prey to social media addiction," Siddaramaiah said.

This comes amid increasing concern about excessive screen time among teenagers. Studies have linked prolonged phone usage to poor concentration, behavioural changes, and mental health challenges.

Authorities are now looking for possible ways to implement it across schools and colleges.

If approved, Karnataka would join countries like Australia that have introduced measures to curb digital addiction among school students. The proposed restriction would apply only to minors under 16.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Andhra Pradesh is also reviewing social media regulations. A Group of Ministers led by Nara Lokesh has been formed to examine existing laws and consider stricter controls on children’s online access.

A final decision in Karnataka is expected after consultations with education experts and stakeholders.
