The Department of Higher Education has made the installation of CCTV cameras compulsory across all public and private universities in Karnataka.

This new rule applies to all public and private universities, as well as government, private and aided degree and polytechnic institutions under the state’s higher education department.

The directive, issued through an official circular, builds on an earlier policy that had already made CCTV surveillance mandatory in engineering colleges. The new order now extends this requirement to all higher education institutions in the state.

The goal of this decision is to prevent serious problems like ragging, drug use, sexual harassment and other harmful activities among students.

Officials believe that having CCTV cameras will help keep a closer watch and create a safer environment in educational campuses.

The department has directed principals of all universities and colleges to promptly ensure the installation of working CCTV systems.

Institutions that already have surveillance in place must submit reports on their operational status to the Department of Collegiate Education by July 21.
