Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (April 6, 2026) appealed to the voters of Assam to keep Congress away from power for continued peace and development.

Addressing election rallies at Barpeta, Hojai, and Dibrugarh, he also emphasised the commitment of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to keep empowering women across the country.

“For a Viksit Bharat, every area and community need to develop, but Congress did not do justice to tribal families during the 60-65 years of its rule. The tribal areas had the highest poverty rate and suffered the most due to violence,” he said.

The Prime Minister said the areas inhabited by the Bodos in Assam suffered due to insurgency, which claimed the lives of more than a 1,000 people in the northeast annually. He attributed this “bloody game” to the Congress brand of politics and corruption.

“Congress signed agreements on paper, but betrayed the tribal society on the ground. That’s why the party’s (peace) agreements failed,” he said, citing the example of the Bodos, who he said suffered before the NDA came into the picture.

Mr. Modi said the Northeastern region has been celebrating the “festival of peace” because of the NDA government’s focus on the development of the tribal area and establishing permanent peace. “The NDA signed peace deals with honesty and efforts are being made to fulfil every commitment made in these agreements,” he said.

“Peace came to Assam after many sacrifices. It is important to keep Congress away for continued peace and development,” he added.

The Prime Minister claimed that the support from women was fuelling the double-engine governments of the BJP-NDA. He said women have been the biggest beneficiaries of various government schemes, including concrete houses, toilets, piped water and free LPG connection.

He highlighted Assam’s flagship Orunodoi scheme, under which the State government provides ₹1,250 per month to women from economically disadvantaged families.

“Ensuring women’s empowerment is a big priority of the BJP, and it is important that women have a greater contribution to State Assemblies and Parliament to build a Viksit Bharat,” Mr. Modi said, alluding to the special session of Parliament convened on April 16 to discuss the issue of 33% reservation for women in State Assemblies and Parliament.

The Prime Minister also attacked the Congress for supporting Pakistan’s agenda. He alleged that the Congress sang to Islamabad’s tune during Operation Sindoor, adding that Congress leaders’s Pakistan connection always weighs heavily on the country.
