Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Thursday hit back at United States President Donald Trump over his remarks on Iran’s economy and food needs and accused him of actually projecting America’s own domestic challenges.

Ghalibaf’s remarks came after Trump said the United States had planned to export food commodities to Iran after the two countries achieved a diplomatic breakthrough.

In a post on X, Ghalibaf responded to Trump’s comments by writing, “Imagine having forty-something million of your own citizens on food stamps and calling another nation hungry. This is not a proclamation. This is a projection. Keep your SNAP advice."

“Our assets, our choices. Mind your malnutrition rates," he added.

The remarks came after Trump, during an interview with CNBC, said Iran’s economy had been severely weakened.

“They have 300 per cent inflation, they’re making no money," Trump said.

Trump also said the United States hoped to export food commodities to Iran if diplomatic efforts progressed.

“They need food. They need corn, wheat, and soybeans, and we’re going to have exclusively our American farmers provide that. Assuming we get to the position where we should get to," he said.

The US president further claimed that Iran had agreed to nearly all of Washington’s demands in the ongoing talks while reiterating that the objective remained preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

“I think they’ve agreed to just about everything we need," Trump said.

According to CBS News, the Trump administration has said the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps, is losing billions of dollars due to payment errors that it has described as “fraud, waste and abuse."

CBS News reported that anti-hunger advocates have disputed that characterisation, arguing it is misleading and could affect food assistance for millions of low-income families.

The outlet also reported that the US Department of Agriculture said on June 24 that SNAP’s payment error rate stood at 10.6% in fiscal year 2025, above the 6% threshold set under the Republicans’ 2025 “One Big Beautiful Bill Act".

According to the department, the error rate amounted to more than USD 10 billion in improper SNAP payments.

CBS News reported that SNAP provided USD 95.7 billion in benefits to American families during fiscal year 2025, with payment errors accounting for roughly one-tenth of the programme’s spending.
