Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State secretary M.V. Govindan said the people of Kerala have realised that the Congress party often fails to keeps its promises, following concerns over funds collected by the party to build houses for families displaced by landslides in Mundakkai and Chooralmala in Wayanad. Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, he expressed confidence that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) will retain power with a resounding majority.

“The LDF has over the past ten years implemented its promises and put out the progress report of implementation each year. On the other hand, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Leader of the Opposition have in the recent months made conflicting statements on the utilisation of funds that they collected for the landslide-displaced families. People from different walks of life had contributed to the Congress’s funds. Where has all this money gone? It is natural for the people of Kerala to question how people who have mishandled disaster relief funds would handle the State’s administration if they gain power,” said Mr. Govindan. He alleged that several families who had believed the Congress’s promises to provide housing have been left in the lurch.

Regarding pre-poll surveys, he said that the LDF has always treated such surveys cautiously, whereas the UDF, which previously celebrated favourable survey results, is now taking legal action against surveys projecting adverse outcomes.
