The suspense over the next Chief Minister of Kerala continued on Tuesday as the Congress leadership intensified consultations with senior party leaders and former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) presidents. Follow LIVE Updates
According to Congress sources, another round of meetings with former PCC presidents is likely to be held between 1 pm and 2 pm as the party leadership attempts to placate all factions before finalising the chief ministerial candidate.
Sources said the Congress is aiming to conclude the consultation process today, raising the possibility of an announcement on the next Kerala Chief Minister by late Tuesday evening or on Wednesday. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is also expected to return to New Delhi later in the day.
Party sources said senior leader Rahul Gandhi has held discussions with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra regarding the CM face. The Congress high command is also expected to reach out to all former PCC presidents as part of the consultation process.
While senior Congress leader K Sudhakaran is likely to arrive in Delhi tonight, veteran leader AK Antony is expected to be consulted over the phone, sources added.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA-elect K Muraleedharan said a decision on the Chief Minister would be taken within the next 48 hours following discussions with party leaders.
“We have all been called for discussions. I had already conveyed my stand to the high command earlier, and I will not change that position," he said.
Responding to remarks made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Muraleedharan said, “Congress is a democratic party. The Prime Minister can make such remarks because he does not have to take any decisions in Kerala, as his party has won only three seats. Criticising Congress every day has become his habit."
The Congress-led United Democratic Front returned to power in Kerala on May 4, ending a decade of Left rule in the state. Ever since Congress-led bloc won in Kerala with 102 out the total 140 seats in the state assembly, several names have popped up as potential candidates for the post of chief minister.
This includes Congress’ senior leader and MP KC Venugopal, and other leaders — VD Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala.
