Kerala teacher booked for urging students ‘not to celebrate Onam’Based on a complaint, an FIR was registered against the woman teacher.

A school teacher was booked for allegedly urging students from the Muslim community to “stay away” from Onam celebrations in their school in Thrissur, police said on Wednesday.

Based on a complaint by Hassan Muhammed of Kadavallur, an FIR was registered against the woman teacher — identified as Khadeeja — who works with Sirajul Uloom English Medium School in Kadavallur on August 26.

The FIR — registered under Section 192 (giving provocation with the intent to cause riot) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita — alleged that the teacher, in a voice message through WhatsApp, had urged the Muslim students to stay away from Onam celebrations, and that if they took part in the festivities at the school it would turn into “shirk”.

In the purported audio message, the teacher could be heard saying that “Onam is a ritual of the Hindu community. Neither we nor our children should be part of it in any manner… We should not get associated with the rituals of other communities. We have to be careful that we do not compromise with the ritual of other communities…’’
