Kerala techie lost in Coorg for 4 days — no food, dead phone. She survived on stream water alone, after getting separated from her 12-member trekking group.

BJP filed a police complaint, suspecting Sharanya's disappearance was staged — pointing to how composed and healthy she looked after 4 days.
A Kerala techie went missing for four days in a dense Karnataka forest — and came back smiling. Now, BJP has filed a complaint calling her survival story fake. Here’s everything you need to know about the GS Sharanya case.
Who Is GS Sharanya, Kerala Techie Who Went Missing In Kodagu?
GS Sharanya is a 36-year-old IT professional from Nadapuram in Kerala’s Kozhikode district, working at an IT firm in Kochi. She’s an avid trekker — and that passion is exactly what landed her at the centre of a national news story.
How Did GS Sharanya Go Missing In Kodagu Forest?
Sharanya reached Kodagu, checked into a homestay in a nearby village, and began trekking at around 8 am. She was part of a group of 12 trekkers heading to Thadiyandamol — the highest peak in Coorg. They reached the summit by around 10:40 am and began descending — when she lost her way.
Sharanya had contacted the homestay during the day, informing them she had lost her way. According to The News Minute, when attempts were made to reach her, her phone was found to be out of coverage.
A massive search operation was launched involving forest officials, the Anti-Naxal Squad, drone cameras, and local tribal communities.
How Did She Survive Four Days In Jungle?
This is the part that everyone’s talking about. With no food in her backpack and her phone dead, she survived on about three litres of water a day, refilling from a stream. “I didn’t carry food since it was considered an easy trek," she said.
She chose to stay on rocky outcrops, believing they were safer from wild animals. The nights brought unfamiliar sounds, including the hum of cicadas, but she never came face to face with any wildlife, Deccan Chronicle reported.
On the fourth day, she was spotted by tribal community members in a remote part of the forest. Seemingly unfazed, Sharanya spoke to the media with a smile.
Why Did BJP File A Complaint?
The rural unit of the BJP filed a complaint with the Napoklu police, alleging that her survival story seems fake and that the disappearance may have been staged for publicity.
The complaint was triggered partly by how composed and healthy she appeared after four days without food.
Mountaineer Shaikh Hassan Khan also publicly expressed doubts, saying her condition and calm demeanour did not align with typical survival experiences in the forest.
Did She Fake It? What Does Investigation Say?
No conclusion yet. The police have not registered an FIR but have decided to probe the matter. “We will thoroughly examine the sequence of events and her claims," a police official who was part of the rescue team told reporters.
The trekking trail at Thadiyandamol has been closed until April 11, and solo trekking has now been banned on the route.
Authorities plan to install directional boards, restrooms, and bio-toilets before reopening. Sharanya, for her part, is unfazed by the scepticism. When asked about her next trek, she said: “Maybe after the summer season."
