What looked like a tragic trekking accident at Pune’s Lohagad Fort has emerged as a chilling story of persistence, planning and repeated failed murder attempts in the past 24 hours.

Police allege that 26-year-old businessman Ketan Agarwal’s fiancée, Siya Goyal, and her alleged lover, Chetan Chaudhary, tried multiple times to kill him before finally succeeding on June 18 by pushing him into a gorge at Lohagad Fort. According to The Times of India, investigators say the pair repeatedly looked for the right circumstances and location, abandoning earlier attempts when things did not go according to plan.

Attempt 1: The ‘Snake’ Excuse

According to police and statements made by Ketan’s family, the first attempt took place during an earlier visit to Lohagad Fort on May 31.

Investigators quoted by TOI say Siya allegedly pushed Ketan near a cliff edge. However, the plan failed when he managed to grab onto a bush nearby and prevent himself from falling. In an attempt to cover up the crime, Siya reportedly told him she had pushed him to save him from a snake. Ketan accepted the explanation and did not suspect foul play.

Attempt 2: A Mother’s Instinct

Police say another attempt proved unsuccessful on June 4 when Ketan’s mother, still reeling from the shock of the May 31 incident, refused to let him revisit the fort.

The Bali Trip That Never Happened

Amid the duo’s attempts to eliminate Ketan, the family said an episode involving the deceased’s passport made them suspicious.

Ketan and Siya were supposed to fly to Bali for their pre-wedding photo shoot on June 6. However, the trip was abruptly cancelled after Ketan’s passport went missing, with Siya claiming that she had misplaced it. The couple, along with Siya’s siblings, was forced to abandon the trip. During the investigation, police concluded that Siya had allegedly hidden or destroyed the passport to prevent the trip from taking place.

Attempt 3: Another Failed Visit To Lohagad

Investigators say the accused returned to Lohagad Fort once again on June 14, planning to kill Ketan. However, given that it was a Sunday, the massive crowd at the popular site forced them to abandon their plan.

Four days later, Siya and her partner Chetan decided the time was right.

Siya convinced Ketan to visit Lohagad Fort again, reportedly under the pretext of celebrating her birthday. Ketan had instead planned a resort celebration, but she insisted on the fort visit and even sought help from his family in persuading him, his father told The Statesman.

Investigators say Chetan travelled separately to the fort and followed the couple. CCTV footage later captured a man in a hoodie trailing them despite the summer heat, a clue that helped investigators unravel the conspiracy. Police allege that once the trio reached a relatively isolated stretch, Ketan was attacked and pushed into a gorge hundreds of feet deep.

What Raised Suspicion

The case was initially registered as an accidental death after Siya told police that Ketan had slipped while taking photographs.

But Ketan’s family refused to accept the explanation. They pointed out that he was an experienced trekker and questioned how such a fall could have occurred. Their insistence prompted a deeper investigation that eventually uncovered the alleged relationship between Siya and Chetan and the sequence of events leading up to the death.
