A 40-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh, accused of killing her and concealing the body for weeks beneath the bathroom floor of their home, served him a bowl of kheer laced with sleeping pills before the crime was carried out.
Ruby Sharma killed her 44-year-old Surendra Sharma and buried his body under the bathroom floor, covering the spot with concrete and fresh tiles. She continued to live in the house while claiming he had gone missing.
What Is The Case?
The case surfaced after Surendra’s disappearance was reported at Sikandra Police Station on May 26. As investigators examined the complaint, they found discrepancies in statements given by family members and noticed suspicious withdrawals from the family’s bank account, prompting a closer investigation.
The probe eventually led police to the bathroom of the couple’s house in Renuka Dham Colony in Agra’s Dehtora area. Officers broke open the tiled floor and recovered skeletal remains believed to be Surendra’s. The remains have been sent for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Confirming the development, ACP Hariparvat Ameesha said, “During the investigation, police found that his wife had killed him and buried the body in their house, covering it with concrete plaster. Legal action followed; the police broke the floor and recovered the body. After completing the inquest proceedings, the body was sent for a post-mortem. The accused, Ruby Sharma, is in custody and being interrogated, with further legal steps underway."
Police said Ruby admitted to the crime during interrogation.
Abuse, Alcoholism
According to investigators, Surendra had been unemployed for some time and struggled with alcoholism. They alleged that he frequently demanded money from Ruby to buy alcohol and assaulted her when she refused. Neighbours also told police that the couple often argued.
The couple had been married for around 16 years and had two daughters. Their primary source of income was the pension of Surendra’s late father, which was shared between Surendra and his brother, Anil Sharma. Police believe the murder took place on May 18.
Pills In Kheer
Investigators alleged that Ruby mixed a large quantity of sleeping pills into a bowl of kheer before serving it to her husband. Their daughters reportedly did not suspect anything unusual when they found him lying motionless, as they were accustomed to seeing him sleep for long hours after consuming alcohol.
Police believe Surendra was killed after he lost consciousness, although they are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of death.
Investigators further alleged that the following morning, Ruby dropped the couple’s daughters at her brother-in-law’s house before returning home. She is accused of digging a pit inside the bathroom, burying Surendra’s body beneath the floor, sealing it with concrete and laying fresh tiles over it to conceal the crime.
The Missing Complaint
Even after the alleged murder, Ruby approached the police and filed a missing person complaint, helping create the impression that Surendra had disappeared.
The investigation took a decisive turn when Surendra’s brother, Anil Sharma, noticed cash continuing to be withdrawn from the family’s pension account even after Surendra was reported missing. Since Surendra had been carrying the ATM card, Anil informed the police, leading investigators back to the house.
When officers examined the residence, they broke open the newly tiled bathroom floor and recovered the buried skeleton.
Police are now investigating whether Ruby acted alone. Deputy Commissioner of Police Syed Ali Abbas said, “It appears a tough task for a woman alone to get the man killed and get the body buried in the house itself. For now, we are still looking for linkages about anyone other than the woman involved in the crime."
