KKR vs GT Live: Kolkata return home with season on edge; GT chase top-two finish

Kagiso Rabada has quietly become one of the biggest reasons behind Gujarat Titans’ rise toward the top of the table. The South African fast bowler currently has the most Powerplay wickets in IPL 2026 with 16 scalps and has produced multiple match-winning spells during GT’s five-match winning streak.

Rabada has won two Player-of-the-Match awards during this run and continues to trouble batters with pace, bounce and movement with the new ball. His partnership with Mohammed Siraj has given Gujarat one of the strongest new-ball attacks in the tournament.

Against Sunrisers Hyderabad recently, the pair controlled one of the most dangerous top orders in the league. Rabada’s ability to strike early could become very important again against KKR because Kolkata’s batting has struggled throughout the season. If GT can break through early at Eden Gardens, they could put KKR under pressure immediately. Rabada’s form has also arrived at the perfect stage of the tournament with the playoffs nearing closer.

One of the biggest reasons behind Kolkata Knight Riders’ difficult season has been their batting inconsistency. Throughout IPL 2026, KKR have struggled to settle on a fixed batting order, often making questionable team and tactical decisions. Even during their four-match winning streak, the batting rarely looked fully convincing. Former captain Sourav Ganguly publicly questioned the management’s handling of Rinku Singh, saying the left-hander bats "too low".

Young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi has emerged as one of the few positives for KKR, scoring 340 runs with four fifties at a strike rate of 139.44. Rinku Singh has also contributed with 286 runs at a strike rate close to 149. However, the overall batting unit has lacked rhythm and consistency.

Finn Allen has shown flashes of aggression while Cameron Green has chipped in occasionally, but KKR still do not look like a settled batting side. Against Gujarat Titans’ balanced bowling attack led by Rabada, Siraj and Rashid Khan, Kolkata’s batters face another major test. If KKR fail again with the bat, their playoff hopes could disappear quickly.

Sai Sudharsan has once again become one of the most consistent batters of the IPL season, but much of the attention has still remained elsewhere. After winning the Orange Cap last year with 759 runs, the left-hander is again among the top scorers in IPL 2026. He has already scored 501 runs this season and trails current Orange Cap holder Heinrich Klaasen by just seven runs.

What makes Sudharsan’s season more impressive is the consistency attached to it. He has struck five fifties in his last six innings, including a century, giving Gujarat Titans stability at the top almost every game. His partnership with Shubman Gill has become one of the strongest opening combinations this season.

Against KKR’s spin-heavy bowling attack, Sudharsan’s role becomes even more important because Eden Gardens has assisted bowlers this year. Gujarat will again expect Sudharsan to anchor the innings while also maintaining the scoring rate. With the playoffs approaching, his form could become one of GT’s biggest advantages.

KKR suffered badly in their defeat against RCB after missing Varun Chakravarthy because of a fractured left leg. The mystery spinner has been one of the biggest reasons behind Kolkata’s late-season revival along with Sunil Narine and Rinku Singh.

Head coach Abhishek Nayar has hinted that Varun could return for this crucial game against Gujarat Titans, which would significantly strengthen KKR’s bowling attack again. Nayar had said after the RCB defeat: "We're always excited to go back (home). We have our fans there, and we're looking to make sure when Varun comes back in the next game, we get our strong bowling side back together and use home conditions to our advantage."

Varun bowled in the nets before the game and the management is monitoring his progress closely. His possible battle against Jos Buttler could become one of the biggest match-ups of the night. Buttler has scored 88 runs off 61 balls against Varun in T20 cricket but has also been dismissed seven times by him. If Varun returns fully fit, KKR’s hopes of staying alive in the tournament could receive a major boost.

While KKR are fighting for survival, Gujarat Titans arrive in Kolkata looking like one of the strongest teams in IPL 2026. Shubman Gill’s side has won five matches in a row and is level on points with table-toppers Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Another win could push GT to the top of the standings.

Their recent success has been built on balance across departments. Gujarat’s bowling attack has clicked at exactly the right time, with Kagiso Rabada and Jason Holder delivering match-winning performances repeatedly. Rashid Khan has also started looking dangerous again after a quiet phase earlier in the tournament.

Alongside the bowling, GT’s batting has remained stable throughout the season. Sai Sudharsan continues to score heavily and is again among the leading run-scorers of the competition after winning the Orange Cap last year.
