Probing the Kasba college gangrape case, Kolkata Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) recovered the same clothes worn by the prime accused, identified as ‘M’, from his residence, as seen in the CCTV footage from the day of the crime, reported Bengali news website anandabazar.com.
The SIT also visited the homes of all three accused — Manojit, Jayeb, and Pramit — and collected multiple samples. Adding to the gravity of the case, investigators revealed that during the incident, the accused snatched the mobile phone of the college’s night-shift security guard, Pinaki Bandopadhyay, allegedly to prevent him from calling for help or alerting anyone about the crime.
Was Another Woman Present In The Union Room?
During questioning, Pinaki also revealed that another female student was present in the college’s union room throughout the day before the victim was assaulted. Around 8:30 pm, that student left the college. Sources say that police are likely to summon and question that female student as well as part of the investigation.
On the day of the incident, Pinaki was assigned to the night shift, while another security guard had been on duty during the day shift, whose statement is also likely to be recorded as part of the investigation.
SIT Confirms Accused Wore ‘Same Dress’
An SIT official confirmed that the clothes seen in the CCTV footage, worn by ‘M’ at the time of the assault, were found during the search at his home. The SIT recovered a red kurta and brown pants with six pockets, which match the clothes captured in the CCTV from the night of the crime. A pair of black shorts was also seized during the search. An officer stated, “The clothes recovered from the house match exactly with what was seen in the CCTV footage from the day of the incident. These garments are now key forensic evidence in the case."
These clothes have now been sent for forensic examination, as investigators believe they could serve as crucial evidence in the case. Police are hopeful that the forensic analysis will help strengthen the case against the accused. Officers believe that the matching garments will play a critical role in corroborating the CCTV evidence with physical proof recovered from the accused’s residence.
The SIT also carried out searches at the homes of the other two accused, seizing clothes and several other samples. In addition to physical evidence, investigators are also checking whether the accused were using any electronic devices beyond their mobile phones, as part of efforts to gather further clues and digital evidence related to the crime.
