Monojit Mishra, the main accused in the alleged gangrape of a student at South Calcutta Law College, drank alcohol inside the institute’s guard room after committing the crime on June 25, the police said on Saturday.
Police said Mishra, along with Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed, later visited a roadside eatery on EM Bypass for dinner and returned to their homes the following morning.
“After committing the crime, the three consumed alcohol in the guard’s room and then asked security guard Pinaki Banerjee to keep his mouth shut about the incident," the officer said.
The investigation revealed that on June 26, a day after the incident, Mishra contacted a person in South Kolkata’s Deshapriya Park, described by police as “influential," for assistance.
However, after sensing the “mood" of the situation, the person refused to help him.
Police said Mishra later approached others described as his “mentors" in an attempt to find a way out of the matter, reported news agency PTI.
He visited multiple areas in the city, including Rashbehari, Gariahat, Fern Road, and Ballygunge Station Road. Mobile tower data also suggested his presence near the Karaya police station area.
Investigators added that the incident appeared to be premeditated, citing call records that showed frequent communication between the three in the days leading up to June 25.
Meanwhile, the South Calcutta Law College is set to reopen on July 7, with classes scheduled to resume, as per a notice issued by the college on Friday.
“Only students of fourth, sixth and eighth semesters are directed to come to the college from 9 am to 12.30 pm for their internal projects (Fourth semester on Tuesday, sixth semester on Wednesday and eighth semester on Thursday)," the notice stated.
The college’s vice-principal said that from July 7, entry to the campus during office hours (8 am to 2 pm) will be restricted to those with valid official reasons and proper identification.
