The three accused in the South Calcutta Law College gang-rape case, Monojit Mishra (31), Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20) and Zaib Ahmed (19), were produced at the Court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Alipore, on Tuesday (July 1, 2025) and remanded to police custody till July 8.

A student of South Calcutta Law College was allegedly gang-raped inside the guard room of the college between 7.30 p.m. and 10.50 p.m. on June 25, 2025.

The three accused named in the First Information Report under charges related to gang-rape and wrongful confinement were arrested between Thursday and Friday.

On Saturday, Pinaki Banerjee, the guard who was on duty at the college at the time of the incident, was also arrested by the police. On Tuesday, the court remanded him to police custody till July 4.

During the proceedings on Tuesday (July 1, 2025), the public prosecutor, praying for 10 days of police custody, said that the survivor had fallen sick while the incident was unfolding, and that the accused had given her an inhaler to recover before continuing to assault her.

Meanwhile, the defence attorney alleged that a “conspiracy” was being created against the accused and that there were no videos of the incident on their phones, as was alleged by the survivor.

“The case is under investigation. Since the case is very sensitive, we do not want to share details. However, the FIR was prompt. The three accused were arrested within 12 hours and one more person was arrested soon after. We have collected a lot of evidence, which is being analysed. The investigation is underway,” Commissioner of Police in Kolkata Manoj Kumar Verma said.

The Kolkata Police on Tuesday also posted on social media that strict legal action would be taken against individuals attempting to disclose the identity of the survivor.

“It has come to notice that certain individuals are attempting to disclose the identity of the victim in the Kasba case through the circulation of confidential documents. This is a serious violation of the law… Respecting the dignity and privacy of victims is a legal obligation and a moral imperative,” the Kolkata Police said.

Meanwhile, a section of lawyers have submitted a letter to the Alipore Bar Council and the Alipore Criminal Court Bar Association, requesting them to pass a resolution to ensure no advocate represents the accused in the case to seek bail.

A section of advocates at Kolkata on July 1, 2025, agitated and submitted a letter appealing to the Alipore Bar Council so that no advocate from the Bar represents the accused in the Kasba law college rape case.

Advocates Chandan Kumar Saha and Subir Sengupta of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s legal department also held an agitation at the Alipore Court raising questions on whether Mr. Mishra, the main accused and a self-proclaimed practising lawyer, had declared his “criminal past” and job appointment at the law college to the Bar.

“We do not want an alleged rapist to flaunt the fact that he is part of the legal fraternity or for him to seek any sympathies on account of that. The other two accused are law students, and therefore, future lawyers. We boycott all three of them from our fraternity,” Mr. Sengupta said.
