The Kolkata Police have begun installing ramps across police stations in the city for easy access for senior citizens and the specially abled.
Sources told News18 that work on ramp construction has already started. Kolkata has a total of 80 police stations, of which 55 require ramps due to structural constraints.
Installation has been completed at 10 police stations, and ramps are expected to be installed at all identified stations within this week.
The initiative has been introduced under the leadership of the new Kolkata Police Commissioner, Supratim Sarkar. Speaking to News18, Sarkar said, “Constructing ramps at Kolkata Police stations is not just a matter of infrastructure; it is a fundamental requirement for justice and dignity. For the elderly and specially abled, a police station is often the first point of contact for seeking protection or reporting a grievance. If the building itself is inaccessible, the law effectively shuts its doors to them. The elderly and those using walkers or canes are at high risk of injury on steep or uneven stairs. Ramps provide a smooth, slip-resistant ease of movement."
After taking charge, the Commissioner visited several police divisions and instructed officers to focus on public behaviour, acknowledging a perception that lower-level police personnel often face complaints regarding conduct. Kolkata has a large senior citizen population, and in many cases, their children live abroad. Police officials believe the ramp initiative will significantly help elderly residents access police services independently and safely.
In a separate effort to assess ground-level policing, sources said the Commissioner personally visited two police stations in disguise, posing as a common citizen who had lost his mobile phone. The visits were aimed at observing how police personnel interact with the public. The identity of the visitor was revealed only later.
Sources within Kolkata Police told News18 that people-friendly policing is a key priority, and initiatives like accessible police stations are expected to strengthen public trust in the force.
