Lakshya Sen will face Lin Chun-Yi in the All England Championships final on March 8, aiming to end India's 25-year title wait.

Star Indian men’s singles shuttler Lakshya Sen will have a second shot at history when he takes on Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chun-Yi in the finals of the All England Championships on Sunday, March 8, in Birmingham.

Lakshya beat Victor Lai of Canada to book his place in the final on Saturday, March 7, moving to within one victory over Chun-Yi, of ending India’s 25-year wait for the prestigious title.

It turned out to be one of the finest matches of his career as Lakshya battled for one hour and 37 minutes before sealing a 21-16, 18-21, 21-15 win against Lai, who had clinched a surprise bronze at last year’s BWF World Championships in Paris.

It will be Lakshya’s second appearance in the All England final after finishing runner-up at the 2022 edition.

Prakash Padukone (1980) and Pullela Gopichand (2001) are the only Indians to have won the All England title.

Apart from them, only Prakash Nath (1947) and Saina Nehwal (2015 runner-up) came close with runner-up finishes.

Lakshya showed immense mental strength, resolute defence and precise strokeplay, enduring punishing rallies of up to 86 shots against Lai.

“I was just taking one point at a time and starting up the third set, I could feel a bit of cramps in the legs and I didn’t know if I could go all the way," Lakshya said after the match.

Lakshya will start as the underdog against Chun-Yi in the final, with the latter having defeated the Indian on all four occasions that they have faced off. Their last encounter came in the India Open in January, when Chun-Yi won a three-game thriller to sink all hearts at the tournament in New Delhi.

Lakshya’s match against Chun-Yi is scheduled for 11:50 am local time, or 5:20 pm IST. It will be the second final of the day and will be played at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham.
