Land sought for greenfield varsity at Jagatsinghpur

Bhubaneswar: Months after chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced greenfield universities in four districts, the higher education department has initiated the process for setting up one in Jagatsinghpur district. It has written to the Jagatsinghpur collector seeking land for one of the universities that would come up in the district. In a letter to the collector on Wednesday, the department stated that the chief minister has accorded approval for establishment of a greenfield university at the district headquarters of Jagatsinghpur district. It asked the collector to identify a suitable land of 50 to 100 acres within or in the vicinity of the district headquarters, which is free of encroachments and suitable for building the university.A greenfield university is a higher education institution set up from scratch on a new site, with new academic systems, governance structures and research facilities, rather than being upgraded from an existing college or university. In Feb this year, the chief minister had announced the setting up of four new greenfield universities at the district headquarters of Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak and Jharsuguda. “Unlike brownfield universities, which are upgraded from existing colleges, greenfield institutions have the unique advantage of implementing fundamentally new organisational models and innovative pedagogy in PG courses from day one, in line with the NEP-2020 mandate,” Majhi had said.
