McLaren’s Lando Norris secured his first F1 title with a third-place finish at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, narrowly beating four-time champion Max Verstappen in dramatic fashion.
Norris amassed 423 points over the season, surpassing Verstappen’s 421 points for Red Bull, thereby claiming the championship crown. Norris acknowledged the addictive taste of victory, but added he seeks to enjoy the moment instead of getting ahead of himself.
“I want to enjoy just this moment for as long as possible. I think it all takes time to acknowledge the size of this achievement, what it is, you know?"
“I mean, it’s taken a hell of a long time. It’s taken most of my life just to achieve that, to achieve yesterday and I want to enjoy those moments for a little while but at the same time, like I mean I’m back in the car on Tuesday."
“And that’s preparation for the next year already. So, you know, one day off and it’s already back to it. It’s already ‘okay, what can we do for next year that’s going to give us an advantage, that’s going to make us perform better and allow us to try and repeat it all over again?’"
“Everyone gets addicted to success, to victories, those kind of things. And it’s definitely a great taste. I certainly want to go again and again and again for as long as I can, but I have to and I think it’s very important to stand still for a little bit, acknowledge what’s going on and savor that moment."
Despite Verstappen’s determined effort to reduce Norris’s 102-point lead from earlier in the season, the Brit ultimately triumphed after a strong performance throughout the year. In stark contrast, Norris’s fellow Briton, Lewis Hamilton, faced his first season without a podium finish during his debut campaign with Ferrari.
Next season, Norris will sport the No.1, a prestige reserved for the reigning champion, while Verstappen will have to relinquish the number to the Brit.
