Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has issued a sharp warning to the United States and Israel, saying that “time is running out" to secure a ceasefire in Lebanon, amid escalating regional tensions.
In a statement, Ghalibaf said any delay in halting hostilities would worsen the situation and expand instability in the region. He stressed that continued military actions would carry consequences.
Reiterating Iran’s position on Lebanon, Ghalibaf, in a post on X, said that allied resistance groups are an inseparable part of the ceasefire framework, leaving no room for reinterpretation.
He also cited key points from a 10-point proposal underpinning the agreement, including that Lebanon and the broader resistance axis form an integral part of the ceasefire and that violations would carry “explicit costs" and draw “strong responses".
Referring to remarks by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the Islamabad talks, he said the Lebanon issue had been clearly acknowledged and could not be rolled back.
His warning comes amid continued Israeli strikes in Beirut and other parts of Lebanon, which Iran views as violations of the ceasefire reached with the involvement of regional and international stakeholders.
Iran has repeatedly said it will stand with Lebanon and the broader resistance axis against any aggression. Officials have also framed recent developments as part of a wider regional confrontation, warning that continued violations risk further escalation.
Iran Closes Strait of Hormuz In Retaliation For Israel’s Attack On Lebanon
Meanwhile, on Thursday Tehran closed the Strait of Hormuz again in retaliation for Israel’s wave of strikes on Lebanon. Washington sought to keep peace talks on track, demanding that the crucial waterway be reopened.
Following the Israeli strikes on Lebanon, Iran accused the United States of violating three key provisions of a proposed 10-point negotiation framework even before talks could begin. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that three core clauses of the plan had already been breached, including commitments related to a ceasefire in Lebanon, respect for Iranian airspace, and Tehran’s right to uranium enrichment.
Israel To Begin Direct Talks With Lebanon
A day after striking Lebanon, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday said that he has authorised direct negotiations with Lebanon “as soon as possible".
“In light of Lebanon’s repeated requests to open direct negotiations with Israel, I instructed the cabinet yesterday to start direct negotiations with Lebanon as soon as possible," Netanyahu said in a statement. “The negotiations will focus on disarming Hezbollah and establishing peaceful relations between Israel and Lebanon," he added.
As per AP report, the negotiations are expected to take place at the US State Department next week, with discussions handled on the American side by US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa and on the Israeli side by Israel’s Ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter. However, it wasn’t clear who will represent Lebanon.
