A tragic incident in Bihar’s Aurangabad district has left four teenage girls dead and one survivor, with conflicting accounts emerging over what led to the fatal consumption of poison.

The incident occurred on January 29 in Moti Bigha village. According to the 14-year-old girl who survived, she and her four friends had gone to a secluded field where they consumed a toxic substance reportedly used to kill herons.

Speaking about the events, the survivor claimed the group acted out of curiosity. “My friend said, ‘let’s eat it and see if we will live or die’. They mixed the poison with water and drank it. I had very little and spat it out immediately, which is why I survived," she said.

She described watching her friends aged between 12 and 15 collapse soon after consuming the substance. Frightened, she ran home and informed her family. Her relatives reportedly made her drink a neem-based solution to induce vomiting, a step that may have saved her life.

However, police have presented a different version of events. Daudnagar SDPO Ashok Kumar Das said initial findings suggest the girls had been seen with some boys during Saraswati Puja celebrations. After being scolded by their parents, investigators believe the girls may have taken the extreme step together, allegedly driven by anger and shame.

The father of one of the deceased girls has rejected the police theory. A migrant labourer who returned from Maharashtra after hearing the news, he questioned the suggestion of a “love-related" angle. “All the girls were between 12 and 15 years old. How could such young girls fall in love?" he said.

The tragedy was followed by further distress for the families. Facing financial hardship and social pressures, the four girls were cremated together without waiting for prolonged official procedures.

When reporters visited the survivor’s home, her grandparents said she had been sent to stay with relatives in another village for safety reasons.

Bihar police have recorded the survivor’s statement and said they are examining all possible angles. A senior official stated that efforts are underway to determine the exact sequence of events and to prevent such incidents in the future.

The case continues to be investigated.
