Late BJP leader Arun Jaitley’s son, Rohan Jaitley, slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after the latter accused the veteran politician of threatening him to stop opposing the now-scrapped farm laws, calling on him to discharge his constitutional post with more responsibility.

Taking to X, Rohan Jaitley pointed out that his father had passed away in 2019, 13 months before the farm laws were passed in the Parliament. “More importantly, it was not in my father’s nature to threaten anyone over an opposing view. He was a staunch democrat and always believed in building consensus," he added.

“If at all such a situation was to occur, as it often does in politics, he would invite free and open discussions to arrive at a mutually acceptable solution to all. That was simply who he was and that remains his legacy today," he added.

“I would appreciate Rahul Gandhi being mindful while speaking of those not with us. He attempted something similar with (former Goa CM) Manohar Parrikar ji, politicising his final days, which was in equally poor taste. Let the departed Rest in Peace," Rohan further said.

In a separate interview with news agency ANI, Rohan said Gandhi’s remarks were “highly condemnable" and said as a Leader of Opposition, he should be more careful with his words and discharge his post with more responsibility.

“When a person is no longer among us, it is best not to speak about them; let them rest in peace," he said. “However, he speaks whatever comes to his mind… Kindly discharge your office with responsibility."

What Did Rahul Gandhi Say?

Rohan’s remarks came after Rahul Gandhi attacked the Centre over his opposition to the contentious three farm laws, which were introduced by the Centre nearly a year after Jaitley’s demise.

“I remember when I was fighting the farm laws, Arun Jaitley ji was sent to me to threaten me. He told me “if you carry on opposing the govt, fighting the farm laws, we will have to act against you". I looked at him and said “I don’t think you have an idea who you are talking to"," he said at the Annual Legal Conclave-2025.

Rahul’s remarks drew the BJP’s ire, who demanded a public apology for his “new lie". BJP leader Amit Malviya asked the Congress leader to stick to facts instead of rewriting timelines to “suit narratives".
