Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has said that he saw Enzo Fernandez play in the 2022 World Cup final for Argentina and knew about his talent, but it required him to see the latter up close at the English club to know how ‘magnificent’ the Argentine midfielder was.
Rosenior took charge of his first league match as Chelsea coach and watched his team defeat high-flying Brentford 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Star forward João Pedro and Cole Palmer, converting from the penalty spot, struck once in each half to end Brentford’s five-game unbeaten run, as Chelsea leapfrogged their London rivals into sixth place.
“I am so impressed. I knew what an outstanding player he was. I told him I was actually at the World Cup final when he played. It isn’t until you see a player up close and you get to know him and what he is about," Rosenior said after the match.
“I have to say he is a winner. The way he trains, the reason he plays so well is that he trains 100%. I have enjoyed working with him. It is his birthday today, so I told him he should go to a steakhouse and enjoy some Argentinian steak," Rosenior added.
Fernandez turned 25 on Saturday, January 17.
It may not have unfolded as planned, but Rosenior was satisfied with the outcome. As he has made clear, his priority is winning above all else and any Chelsea win fits the bill.
“They are a good team. Very good team. Very well organised. Very good without the ball. Really understand where they need to be with the ball. Very well organised on set plays," Rosenior said.
“So for me, it is about winning. I have said that since I have come in. We did not play the free-flowing football that I want us to in the end, but we got the job done and that is a really, really pleasing result for the players to give them and me more confidence moving forward," Rosenior added.
