Lionel Messi added another historic milestone to his glittering career on Tuesday (July 7) by becoming the all-time leading assist provider in FIFA World Cup history. The Argentina captain achieved the feat during his side’s Round of 16 clash against Egypt in Atlanta.

Messi, who already holds the record for the most goals in FIFA World Cup history, set up Cristian Romero for Argentina’s opening goal in the 79th minute to register his latest World Cup assist and move to the top of the tournament’s all-time assists chart. The assist saw the 39-year-old from Rosario surpass the previous record and add yet another remarkable achievement to his legendary World Cup career.
