Liverpool star Diogo Jota passed away in a tragic car crash on Thursday, according to local reports in Spain.
The 28-year-old Portuguese forward died in a crash near Zamora, in northwestern Spain, according to Spanish news agency EFE. Spanish news outlet Marca reported that footballer Jota and his 26-year-old brother, Andre (also a footballer), were involved in the incident where their car fell off the road, both succumbing to the injuries.
The incident happened a mere two weeks after Jota had married his long-term girlfriend, Rute Cardoso, in Porto.
Jota, who joined the Reds from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 2020, made 182 appearances for the club. Jota scored 65 goals and provided 26 assists for Liverpool, contributing to two Premier League titles.
Jota made 49 appearances for Portugal since his debut in 2019 and was part of their recent UEFA Nations League final-winning squad over Spain in Munich.
