The Kerala Lok Ayukta has ordered an inquiry against officials of the Motor Vehicles department (MVD), the Station House Officer of the Mulanthuruthy police station and Cars24, a Kochi-based firm dealing in used cars, over alleged irregularities in the sale of a car belonging to a non-resident Indian (NRI).

A Division Bench of the panel, comprising Lok Ayukta Justice N. Anilkumar and Upa Lok Ayukta V. Shircy, found that the firm had handed over the vehicle, procured from the NRI, to some persons without transferring ownership.

The seller later found himself named as a respondent in a motor accident claim case following an accident involving the car, which was no longer in his possession. He had also received tickets for traffic violations committed using the vehicle. The police and MVD officials failed to act on the car owner’s repeated complaints in this regard, the panel was informed.
