Arjun Erigaisi suffered another painful near miss after narrowly failing to win the 2026 TePe Sigeman Tournament title, eventually losing to world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in a dramatic sudden-death tie-break in Malmo, Sweden.
Heading into the final round as the sole leader, Arjun looked poised to clinch the title despite landing in serious trouble against American teenager Andy Woodward. The Indian grandmaster was on the brink of defeat in a difficult knight-versus-bishop endgame, with Woodward holding an extra pawn and a winning position. However, the young American faltered at the crucial moment, allowing Arjun to escape with a draw from an almost hopeless situation.
The draw took Arjun to 5 points and temporarily kept him ahead of the chasing pack. Everything then hinged on the final-round clash between Carlsen and Turkish prodigy Yagız Kaan Erdogmus. A draw in that game would have secured the title for Arjun.

Magnus Carlsen, however, once again showcased his trademark resilience. After being under pressure for much of the game, the Norwegian capitalised on a late collapse by the 14-year-old Turkish sensation, forcing a win and drawing level with Arjun at the top of the standings.
The heartbreaking defeat proved too much for Erdogmus, who reportedly broke down in tears after the game.
How Magnus Carlsen Beat Arjun Erigaisi?
The tournament then moved into blitz tie-breaks between Arjun and Carlsen. The Norwegian struck first, defeating the Indian with the black pieces to take an early lead. Facing elimination, Arjun responded impressively in the second blitz game, winning with black himself to level the score and force sudden death.
The deciding game, however, followed a familiar script. Carlsen held his nerve in the final showdown to secure the title, once again demonstrating his remarkable ability to deliver under pressure.
The five-time world champion had actually started the tournament poorly, scoring just 2 points from his first 4 rounds after suffering a loss to Jorden van Foreest. But Carlsen recovered strongly, winning his final 3 classical games before edging past Arjun in the tie-break finale.
