The Maharashtra government has stepped up efforts to enforce its decision – making Marathi communication mandatory for non-Marathi commercial drivers, including those operating auto-rickshaws, taxis and app-based transport services such as Ola Cabs, Uber and e-bike taxis.

To review implementation and prepare a clear action plan, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has called a special meeting on April 23 at 11 am. The meeting will bring together transport officials, experts, literary personalities and administrative representatives.

The move comes after repeated complaints that the 2019 government order on Marathi communication has not been effectively implemented in many parts of the state.

According to officials, passengers often face inconvenience when drivers from outside Maharashtra are unable to communicate in Marathi. Everyday travel situations such as giving directions, discussing routes, understanding destinations or seeking urgent help can become difficult because of the language gap.

Taking serious note of these concerns, the government has decided to revive and strengthen enforcement of the earlier order. The Transport Department is planning to roll out the fresh drive around Maharashtra Day, giving the initiative both administrative and symbolic significance.

The campaign has gained additional importance after Marathi was recently granted the status of a classical language. Officials said the objective is not only to ensure compliance, but also to build familiarity and respect for Marathi among non-Marathi drivers who work and earn their livelihood in Maharashtra.

As part of the initiative, the government is considering practical Marathi language training for drivers. A simple course focused on day-to-day commuter conversations, common instructions and passenger interaction is likely to be designed so that drivers can learn quickly and use the language confidently.

Prominent writers, educationists and cultural personalities have been invited to offer guidance for the programme. Their inputs are expected to help shape a user-friendly training model.

The Transport Commissioner will also attend the discussions chaired by Minister Pratap Sarnaik.

Officials believe the move can improve communication between commuters and drivers, reduce confusion during travel and strengthen the presence of Marathi in everyday public life.

The government sees the initiative as a practical step that balances convenience for passengers with respect for the state’s language and culture.
