Maharashtra is set to get a major boost in vocational education, with the Centre indicating support for hosting a national-level skill competition in the state.
The assurance came after Maharashtra Skill Development Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha placed the proposal before Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary during the inauguration of the West Zone round of the IndiaSkills Competition in Gandhinagar.
Lodha urged that Maharashtra be chosen as the host for the 2028 national skill competition. Chaudhary responded favourably, indicating that the proposal would be considered further.
The IndiaSkills competitions are being organised nationwide by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and the National Skill Development Corporation as part of preparations for the WorldSkills Competition to be held in Shanghai later this year.
The Gandhinagar round saw over 300 students from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Goa take part. The next stage will be held in Noida, following which selected candidates will go on to represent India at the global event.
Interacting with participants, Lodha said such platforms help students build confidence and open up real career opportunities based on practical ability. He added that Maharashtra has been steadily expanding training programmes and aims to become a leading state in skill development.
Union Minister Chaudhary said India’s young population will play a key role in the country’s development goals, and skill training will be central to that effort.
Students competing at the international level will demonstrate skills in fields such as mechatronics, electrical work, electronics, automobile technology, industrial systems, cyber security and social care services. Lodha said Maharashtra’s participants had performed well in the previous edition and expressed confidence that Indian competitors would once again deliver strong results.
