The Maharashtra government will prohibit the sale of Sting energy drink and other similar beverages within 500 metres of schools.
The Maharashtra government on Friday announced that the sale of Sting energy drink and other similar energy beverages, along with intoxicating substances, will be prohibited within a 500-metre radius of schools. The move comes amid growing concerns over the health effects of such drinks on children and adolescents.
Speaking in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Food and Drug Administration Minister Narhari Zirwal said the decision was taken following concerns over the growing consumption of energy drinks by schoolchildren. He said the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been instructed to strictly enforce the ban, while schools have been asked to conduct awareness programmes highlighting the potential health risks associated with these beverages.
Responding to a question raised by BJP MLA Vikram Pachpute, Zirwal said concerns over the availability of energy drinks near educational institutions were justified. He stated that if the sale of Sting or any other energy drink, as well as intoxicating substances, is found within 500 metres of a school campus, authorities will take immediate action against those responsible.
During the discussion, Pachpute also urged the government to consider introducing a rule that would prohibit the sale of energy drinks to individuals below the age of 18.
Other legislators, including Rahul Kul and Varun Sardesai, supported the demand for stricter regulations to curb the easy availability of energy drinks to schoolchildren. They called for stronger safeguards to discourage their consumption among minors.
In response, Zirwal said the government would not only ensure strict implementation of the 500-metre restriction but would also intensify awareness campaigns in schools to inform students about the possible health risks linked to energy drink consumption. He reiterated that the government is committed to protecting children’s health through both enforcement measures and public awareness initiatives.
