In a sweeping administrative overhaul, the Uttar Pradesh government on Monday transferred 27 IPS officers, including 13 district police chiefs, signalling a major reset in the state’s policing structure.

The reshuffle includes one Inspector General (IG)-rank officer and 26 Superintendents of Police (SPs), and is being seen as a mix of administrative recalibration and political feedback. Police chiefs were changed in 13 districts, while several young officers from the 2019 IPS batch have been given field postings for the first time.

Among key changes, Amroha SP Amit Kumar Anand and Hamirpur SP Diksha Sharma have been posted as Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) in Lucknow. IG Training Chandra Prakash has been assigned the crucial Security department. Jalaun SP Durgesh Kumar has been moved to Ayodhya, where he will head the Special Security Force (SSF), a sensitive assignment given the city’s importance.

Officials with the Government said the reshuffle is an outcome of the state government’s growing reliance on directly recruited IPS officers. Of the 13 SPs removed, seven were promoted officers from the Provincial Police Service (PPS) cadre who had later been inducted into the IPS. These include Shahjahanpur SP Rajesh Dwivedi, Etah SP Shyam Narayan Singh, Mahoba SP Prabal Pratap Singh, Rampur SP Vidya Sagar Mishra, Kaushambi SP Rajesh Kumar II, Jalaun SP Durgesh Kumar, and Bahraich SP Ram Nayan Singh.

In contrast, only three promoted officers have been given district postings in this round. Kamlesh Bahadur has been posted to Mau, Vishwajeet Srivastava to Bahraich, and Vinay Kumar Singh to Jalaun.

A major highlight of the reshuffle is the elevation of 2019-batch IPS officers to district leadership roles. Shashank Singh has been appointed SP Mahoba, Shakti Mohan Awasthi to Maharajganj, Akash Patel to Chandauli, Mrigank Shekhar Pathak to Hamirpur, and Satyanarayan Prajapati to Kaushambi. The move is being viewed as an effort to infuse fresh energy and accountability into district policing.

Sources indicate that political feedback played a significant role in the transfers. Several SPs were reportedly removed following complaints from local legislators and Members of Parliament. Districts such as Bahraich, Jalaun, Etah, Kaushambi, and Mahoba saw changes under such pressure.

In some cases, tenure also influenced decisions. Hamirpur SP Diksha Sharma had been in the district for nearly three years and was shifted to accommodate a younger officer. Similarly, Mau SP Ilamaran G and officer Somendra Meena were transferred after long tenures in their respective postings.

Other notable postings include Lakhan Singh Yadav as SP Amroha, Aditya Bansal as SP City Aligarh, and IPS officer Amrit Jain as SP City Muzaffarnagar. Mahadik Akshay Sanjay has been appointed SP Rural.

Two high-profile removals—Shahjahanpur and Bahraich—have drawn particular attention due to the circumstances surrounding them.

In Shahjahanpur, SP Rajesh Dwivedi was removed following a controversy over the alleged vandalism of statues of martyrs linked to the Kakori incident. The issue triggered sharp political reactions, after which an FIR was registered and administrative action followed.

In Bahraich, SP Ram Nayan Singh’s removal is being linked to complaints from public representatives regarding his inaccessibility. It is learnt that several elected representatives had approached Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, alleging that the officer frequently did not respond to their calls. He has now been posted to the 49th Battalion of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) in Noida.

Ram Nayan Singh had also been in the spotlight earlier after a controversy erupted over a ceremonial guard of honour being given to a religious narrator at the police lines. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had criticised the move, saying such practices distract the police from maintaining law and order. Following the remarks, the state’s Director General of Police had also sought an explanation from the officer.
