Malankara Orthodox church defends FCRA transparency, criticizes new Rules

Malankara Orthodox Syrian church has demanded a relook into the FCRA rules amendement

Kottayam: Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church has stated that it had nothing to hide regarding FCRA. The activities of the church are transparent, and it operates in accordance with the laws of the country, the church’s media division head Yuhanon Mar Diascoros Metropolitan said on Thursday. At the same time, consultations could have been held with the concerned parties before amending the rules, he opined. Democracy is strengthened only when everyone is taken into confidence and moved forward.Demanding the details of the social media accounts and publications of FCRA account holders is suspicious and an encroachment upon fundamental rights, the church said.Financial transactions carried out through bank accounts are being audited accurately.

In addition to this, attempting to audit the stances of organisations is a challenge to the freedom of expression. One can naturally suspect whether this is an indirect warning that accounts may be frozen if govts are criticised. Provisions to levy large amounts as fines, even if technical errors occur, will weaken organisations. The possibilities of obstructions to mission activities outside the state are also evident in the new rules.

The authorities are obliged to give clear answers to such doubts. The hospitals and schools donated by Christian churches are symbols of love and sincerity towards this country. An impression should not be created that the Christian mission of the churches is being observed with suspicion. National integration becomes meaningful only when everyone is made a participant in nation-building. It is regrettable that while laws are being simplified for industries and mining, rules are shackling humanitarian service, said the metropolitan. The church said further steps would be taken on the FCRA matter after consulting with various denominations.
