West Bengal Former Chief Minister and TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee has convened an emergency meeting of all Trinamool Congress councillors in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) after multiple notices were issued to properties linked to her nephew and party MP Abhishek Banerjee over the past seven days.
A party councillor, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the meeting would focus on the changing situation within the civic body. According to the councillor, the party believes the KMC’s bureaucratic structure is functioning independently under directions from the Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Department while bypassing elected councillors, the mayor and members of the mayor-in-council (MMIC), news agency IANS reported.
The civic board is controlled by the Trinamool Congress, with Firhad Hakim continuing as mayor.
“The Municipal Commissioner, Smita Pandey, has cancelled the municipal session of KMC, which was scheduled today. At the same time, the municipal administration is operating on its own as per the instructions of the state government without any consultation with the mayor and MMICs. In such a situation, our supreme leader has convened a crucial meeting with all the party councillors later in the day to discuss ways to handle the changed situation," the party councillor said.
The KMC earlier this week initiated a probe into several properties reportedly owned or co-owned by Abhishek Banerjee. Notices under Section 400(1) of the KMC Act, 1980, were issued to 17 such properties within KMC limits. The provision allows owners of allegedly illegal constructions to appear before civic authorities and present their case.
Copies of the notices were pasted outside the properties concerned. Two residences linked to the Diamond Harbour MP — one at 188A Harish Mukherjee Road and another at 121 Kalighat Road — are among the properties under scrutiny.
Mayor Firhad Hakim said he was unaware of the development and maintained that the municipal commissioner has the authority to issue such notices without informing the mayor.
Another controversy surfaced on Thursday after the KMC’s Assessor-Collector (South) office issued a fresh notice related to the property at 188A Harish Mukherjee Road.
As per KMC records, the property was originally purchased in the name of M/s Animesh Tradelink Private Limited, which was later renamed ‘Leaps and Bounds Infra Consultants Private Limited’.
It has also been alleged that despite demolition of the old structure and construction of a new building named ‘Santiniketan’, the property continued to be assessed as ‘owner-occupied’.
