Here’s why a possible explanation lies in the complex opposition dynamics, particularly in the run-up to the 2027 UP elections

As campaigning in West Bengal ends amid intense political activity and heavy security deployment, one key question continues to puzzle observers—Why did Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav stay away from the ground campaign despite openly backing TMC chief Mamata Banerjee?
It was widely expected that Yadav would actively campaign in support of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). In January this year, Yadav had even visited Kolkata and met Banerjee after a private event, signalling growing political proximity. However, when the crucial campaign phase arrived, he chose not to participate physically in Bengal’s electoral battle.
Interestingly, other opposition leaders such as Tejashwi Yadav, Hemant Soren, and Arvind Kejriwal campaigned actively in the state, adding to the curiosity around Yadav’s absence.
A possible explanation lies in the complex opposition dynamics. In Bengal, the TMC and the Congress are direct rivals. At the same time, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been openly critical of the TMC government during his campaign.
Given this context, Yadav’s active campaigning for Banerjee could have sent mixed political signals ahead of the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections next year, where the Samajwadi Party may need to maintain coordination with Congress. Political observers believe this balancing act could be a key reason behind his decision to stay away from on-ground campaigning.
The Samajwadi Party has, however, dismissed such speculation. Party spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary told News18 India that Yadav has consistently supported Banerjee through social media and public statements. He emphasised that “support matters more than physical presence", reiterating that Yadav stands firmly with Banerjee. The party also denied any link between his absence and the upcoming UP elections or Congress factor.
Even allies like the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) maintain that Yadav’s support for Mamata is clear. RJD MP and chief spokesperson of the party Manoj Jha said Yadav’s backing for Banerjee is evident, adding that his absence from Bengal campaigning could be due to prior commitments rather than political hesitation.
While multiple theories are being discussed, the exact reason behind Yadav’s absence remains unclear. What is evident, however, is that his decision was a calculated one, reflecting the delicate political balancing within the opposition camp ahead of crucial elections.
