Margao: Alert villagers in Sarzora caught a vehicle red-handed while allegedly dumping beef waste in the open beside the road at Novavado, leading to police intervention and penalties being imposed on the culprit. The incident unfolded when residents noticed a suspicious vehicle parked alongside the road, emitting a strong stench that drew their attention. Upon questioning, the driver provided evasive replies, raising further suspicions among the villagers who gathered at the spot.“We observed an increase in the volume of waste dumped along this particular stretch over the last two weeks. Today, people noticed this vehicle parked alongside the road, and the stench was too bad.
When the driver was questioned, he gave evasive replies. The panchayat will impose fines on him,” said panchayat member Ria Oliviera. The police were immediately informed, and panchayat members visited the location to assess the situation. The municipal council in nearby Margao has been grappling with similar issues, where ‘black spots’ for illegal dumping have been emerging throughout the city despite door-to-door garbage collection services across all wards.
Persons from neighbouring villages are believed to be dumping their waste into the municipal area under the cover of darkness. This prompted the council to intensify its night vigil, forming five specialised teams to patrol problem areas well into the night.
