Man gets life imprisonment in 24-yr-old murder case

A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for a murder that occurred nearly 24 years ago. Rameshwar Ram was convicted by a Buxar court for his role in the 2002 incident, which stemmed from a water dispute. The victim, Meghnath Ram, died from injuries sustained during the altercation. Two other accused individuals passed away during the trial.

Buxar: A court on Tuesday convicted a man in a nearly 24-year-old murder case and sentenced him to life imprisonment.District and Additional Sessions Judge-I-cum-Special Judge (SC/ST PoA Act) Uday Pratap Singh found Rameshwar Ram (60), a resident of Bhadwar village under Bagen Gola police station area, guilty under Sections 302/34 of the Indian Penal Code.

The court awarded him rigorous life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs10,000.According to additional public prosecutor Jai Ram Singh, the incident took place on April 30, 2002, following a dispute over the flow of water from a hand pump in the village. During the altercation, the accused allegedly assaulted Meghnath Ram causing grievous injuries. The victim later succumbed to his injuries.An FIR was lodged at Bagen Gola police station on May 1, 2002.

After investigation, police filed a chargesheet and the trial was conducted in the sessions court.Initially, three persons were named as accused in the case. However, Khakhanu Ram and Sahabir Ram died during the trial.After examining the evidence and hearing arguments from both sides, the court held Rameshwar guilty. The court also informed him of his right to appeal and said he could seek assistance from the Legal Services Authority if he was unable to afford a lawyer.
