Agra: A 50-year-old man in Aligarh allegedly strangled his 19-year-old daughter for speaking to her boyfriend despite family opposition, tied her, in a semi-conscious condition, to his back, on his motorcycle to a nearby field and strangled her to death and buried her in a five-foot-deep pit before pretending the next morning that she was missing, police said on Wednesday. The suspected “ honour killing” took place in Jarara under Khair police station limits. Police identified the accused as Puran Singh and the victim as his daughter Shivani, who had been in a relationship with a youth from the same village and had spoken to him over the phone for nearly a year. Police arrested the father after he confessed during questioning that he killed his daughter over her relationship with a neighbour. After killing Shivani, Puran allegedly pretended to search for his missing daughter to avoid suspicion.
However, neighbours became suspicious after Shivani remained untraceable and informed the police.During questioning, Puran initially gave contradictory statements and claimed that his daughter had died due to illness, police said. After sustained interrogation, he allegedly confessed to the murder and disclosed the burial site. Police teams reached the field on Tuesday night and exhumed Shivani’s body in the presence of villagers.
The recovery drew a large crowd, while some family members reportedly fled the house after police arrived.
The body was sent for post-mortem examination.Shivani’s mother, Lata, later filed a complaint against her husband. SP (rural) Manish Kumar Mishra said police registered a case and were investigating the sequence of events. Khair SHO Sanjeev Kumar Kashyap said, “A case has been registered under BNS section 103 (murder) and section 238 (deliberate destruction of evidence). The father has been arrested and sent to jail.”
